"It is not a sign of weakness to compromise"

You know how cats can be eternally fascinated by a small ball or something similar? My cat is no different: in his most lively moments, he punches the ball in all directions only to start chasing it as if his life depended on it. I guess his life DOES depend on it. I never had a cat who can play "fetch!" as good as this one; really, throw the ball away - say on your bedroom wardrobe - and he'll devise a route to fetch it and bring it back to me. I think my cat has the same relation with people - he will scratch and bite ("playfulness" he will call it), sometimes until you bleed, and when you say you had enough, he sits there staring at you with those big eyes of his.

And then, maybe five minutes later - sometimes half an hour or an hour - he will draw himself close to you, just like that, just when you thought you may have been too hard on him. He will jump on your sofa - or wherever you are sitting - and he'll come purring for your strokes, craving your attention. No, you are never angry, nor will you ever hate him, you only expect him to remember this for the next time. Which he won't; at least not now.

But when he is lying there, purring in his innocence, you will pet him, stroke him and be nice to him. After all, he's being nice to you and that is what you want, right?
